How to make homework more effective.

Have you noticed most teachers follow similar formats?

We follow certain routines in class which enable learners to retain information using repetition. In the field, our slang for such organization is PDP, PPU, UPP, TTT, and the list goes on. Each method is a little different, but each effectively reaches the same goal.

"Okay... What?" You may think. "What does that mean for me?"

If you approach home assignments the same way your teacher approaches your lessons, you provide yourself a level of reptition with the language points which will help you remember, and obtain fluency
EVEN FASTER!

How:  Organize your approach to your homework as follows:

Example, You are working on Present Simple vs. Present Progressive exercises. Your teacher has given you a series of websites, PDF files, and listening activities. How do you approach it all?

1) Fold your paper in 3 sections.
2) Listen first! Always listen several times to acquire native speech patterns.
3) Attempt your homework in pencil on the left fold. Try to recall how the native speakers used the grammar.
4) Review the rules, and compare your answers to the rules!
5) In the middle fold, correct yourself. Write the rules for each error.
6) Take a break. Drink tea. Go get fresh air. Watch TV. Write an Email. Send an SMS. DO SOMETHING ELSE FOR A FEW MINUTES! (just like having a break in class)
7) Listen again! 1 or 2 more times.
8) Fold the 3rd page over so you cannot see your original sections. Do the exercise one more time. Compare your progress.

Use this paper in class to discuss with your teacher what is still difficult.

The whole process should take around 45 to 60 minutes.

How to achieve better results, learning English through Skype

Learning English is a hard work – so we were told at school , but nobody even tried to explain  us why.  Why  must  we sit and learn grammar and words?  The  answer  is quite simple – we must not.  Human brain is a peculiar thing – it remembers only what is interesting to it.  That is why classes need to make one interested in learning, need to motivate a person.

There stands up a second question – how?

Every person has different wants and needs. One needs English for travelling, another – for business trips, and it is quite stupid to teach  both of them same things. A teacher is needed to coordinate and train student’s skills in language, but the most important thing is that every student should try to achieve something outside language classes. That is why we give you home tasks and reading materials.  Will that be enough?  Of course if you have plenty of time it is, but unfortunately many of  us are limited in time. That’s the reason they asked for our help.  45 minutes+20 minutes of home task  ones  in two days is really not enough.

That little article is about what to do to improve your English, when your teacher is offline)

Listening skills

Try to watch your favorite movies in English. There are plenty of download links on the net. While watching, you will surely attach English phrases with ones in your native language,  that you’ve heard before, watching this movie in translation. Later on you can start watching  movies, you never  had seen in your native language. Watch BBC or Euronews in English.  Listen to the English-speaking radio on line. You’ll like the result.

Speaking skills

That’s simple. Sing songs. You like Madonna? Great, turn her CD on and sing along.  That is simple and pleasant, but it does work!

And there are always dozens of phonetic exercises for you on the net.

Reading skills  Understanding

Switch your cell into English.  Get yourself an English language version of Windows.  Hang an English calendar on your wall. Surround yourself with English!

Write words and phrases on sheets of paper and put it everywhere you can see them. That’s an old thing, but it works.

And finally – read English books, newspapers, magazines, blogs – anything you can find and anything that may be just interesting for you.

Writing

Try writing a diary in English.  You can tell yourself about your lessons, plans, big dates and many other things – just write.

I do hope written above had been useful for you and helped you to develop your own ideas of how to learn English effectively.

I

I wanted for a long time to have English classes but with my job and two kids it was really hard to find the time. With english-natali.ru I found a good way to do it : I meet my teacher two or three times a week on the internet and I don't have to bother to take the tube or my car... I just have to find 45 minutes free in the evening, which is easy to do. "Since I have individual lessons I feel free to ask for what I want. My teacher knows exactly my weaknesses and what I need to improve. I've experienced other classes in the real world but I have to say that this virtual one is one of the more effective. Technology is a great help when your teacher knows how to make a good use of it."
